Letter to Union Minister of Shipping and Road Transport

Dear Sri. Nitin Gadkariji,

Government of Kerala is giving top priority to the development of Inland Waterways to utilize its natural advantages and develop sustainable inter modal transport system. This is in keeping with national priorities.

Kerala had made a formal request to extend National Waterway 104 (West Coast Central System) from Kollam to Kovalam in the South and Kottappuram to Hosdurg in the North. This is an eminently feasible suggestion enabling the entire State to the benefited. But as per the National Waterway Act 2016, it is seen that the National Waterway III is extended only upto Kozhikkode in the North and just 100 Mtrs to the South of Kollam Jetty. This means critical stretches touching the capital as well as northern part of the State get left out, restricting the potential of the waterway.

In this context, may I request you to accede to our earlier request and make necessary amendments to the National Waterways Act.

Yours sincerely

Pinarayi Vijayan
