Dear Shri. Narendra Modiji,
I would like to bring to your kind attention to the critical issues related to rail development in the State and the urgency for formation of the Peninsular Railway Zone with headquarters at Ernakulam to speed up ongoing projects as well as those in the pipeline.
As you are aware that Kerala has inadequate rail infrastructure and with the railways not able to make the required investment, the state has incorporated a joint venture company with 51:49 equity with railways. With the zonal office located in Chennai, the decision making has been slow and many projects like Rapid Rail transit system, Thalassery-Mysore, Angamaly-Sabari, Guruvayoor-Thirunavaya and the coach factory at Palakkad are pending for a very long time.
To speed up the process of implementation and for clearance for various projects in pipeline, the State Government has been demanding the Peninsular Railway Zone by carving out the Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad division from southern railways. Peninsular Zone could have jurisdiction from Kanyakumari to Mangalore which would cover the entire west coast south of Mangalore.
It is understood that certain groups are lobbying to carve out Nemom (Thiruvananthapuram) to Thirunelveli and Nagarcoil to Kanyakumari line from Thiruvananthapuram railway division for merging with Madurai railway division.
I would like to point out that Nemom is in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation limits and is slowly developing into a satellite facility to reduce the burden of Thiruvananthapuram railway station in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram city.
I would therefore request for your kind intervention in the matter to put an end to any attempt to transfer the Thiruvananthapuram-Thirunelveli and Nagarcoil–Kanyakumari line to Madurai division and to issue necessary instructions to the Ministry of railway for the early formation of the Peninsular Railway Zone with headquarters in Ernakulam.
Shri. Narendra Modi
Hon’ble Prime Minister of India
