Letter to Minister of Information & Broadcasting (Film Division Trivandrum)

Dear Smt. Smriti ji,

Films Division, Government of India, Trivandrum Office has been functioning since 5 decades at the capital city of Kerala for the implementation of Compulsory exhibition of Central/State Informative films at Cinema halls under the Cinematograph Act 1952 as well as Kerala Cinema regulations rules 1988. For fulfilling the licensing conditions in Kerala State a Certificate from the Films Division, Govt. of India has been made mandatory stating that all arrangements have been made for the supply of approved films.

Films Division, Trivandrum branch is supplying of approved films to 625 Cinema halls in Kerala. Every year the number of Cinema halls is increasing by 25% in Kerala State i.e. during January 2017 the number of Cinema Halls was 552 and on January 2018 the number has increased to 624.

Apart from the supply of approved films, Films Division, Trivandrum branch is conducting screening of education and informative films throughout the State in association with Public Information Campaigns, Schools and Colleges, NGOs, Film Societies and State Government bodies. The Kerala State Chalachitra Academy is also giving full technical support to Films Division for conducting film festivals. During the last five decades Films Division, Trivandrum branch ensured the propagation of Informative films throughout the State.

A letter No. A-60011/17/2016-Est.I Vol(II) dated 14/02/2018 has been received from Films Division Head Office stating that Competent Authority has decided to close the Trivandrum Branch office on or before 31st March 2018 and to merge it with the Chennai Branch Office.
Films Division is the pioneer organisation of Information and Broadcasting units in Kerala and has been actively engaging in the propagation of Government policies and other informative film since last 5 decades. No other organisation can replace its role. The shifting or the merger of such an office of importance will neither be in the interest of the State, nor that of the Centre.
Considering the above facts the decision of closing down the Trivandrum branch may be reviewed.

With regards,

Yours sincerely,

PINARAYI VIJAYAN
