CHIEF MINISTER held all party meeting at Kannur on 15th March 2008  

CHIEF MINISTER’S PEACE INITIATIVE


The tragic incidents in Kannur district during the last few weeks were of great concern for not only the Government of Kerala but all right – thinking persons in the State. In fact nobody wanted killings and counter killings by activists of political parties at the grassroots level. Shri. V.S. Achuthanandan as Chief Minister, after wide-ranging consultation with political parties within the Government and in the opposition took the momentous peace initiative of calling an all party peace committee meeting under his aegis on 15th March, 2008, at Kannur.

The meeting convened at Kannur Collectorate Conference Hall on 15th morning was attended by leaders of all political parties including Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan, General Secretary of CPM, Shri. Ramesh Chennithala, K.P.C.C. President and Shri. P.K. Krishnadas, President, BJP. The confabulations were made in a friendly atmosphere and proposals to stop and solve the unfortunate events in Thalassery in recent weeks came up for consideration.

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan read out the resolution accepted by the meeting. Self – restraint must be observed in the face of whatsoever provocations from whatsoever quarters. The meeting decided to take stern measures in places where peace is disturbed. It has also been decided that meetings under the chairmanship of District Collector with the presence of Superintendent of Police be held in those places in every month to prevent incidence of violence. If necessary, meetings would be held to ensure peace at local levels in Thalassery. Leaders of all political parties expressed satisfaction over the peace initiative.
