Ship Repairing Yard to come up either at Vizhinjam or Poovar

Thiruvananthapuram 11-10-2011: A Ship Repairing Yard in the state is proposed to come up either at Vizhinjam or Poovar worth Rs 1500 crore. For this around 150 acres of land needs to be acquired.

The decision to build a Repairing Unit came up at the meeting convened by Minister K Babu attended by Cochin Shipyard Chairman Subramanyam and others, presided over by CM.

The Shipyard Chairman is entrusted to give a report within two months regarding the suitable place for building the unit. Final decision will be taken after getting the report.

Three places Azheekal, where Government has land, Vizhinjam and Poovar were under consideration, but the Shipyard Chairman said that they needed land near a port as huge cranes and machines needs to be shipped to build the unit.

So there is a possibility to select Vizhinjam to build the Ship Repairing Unit. Survey will be conducted at Vizhinjam and Poovar.
