Thiruvananthapuram 25-01-2012: Guruvayur Satyagraha was a historic movement that paved way for major social reforms during the period of the freedom struggle, said CM. He was speaking at the functioned organised by the Institute of Parliamentary Affairs in connection with the 80 anniversary of Guruvayur Sathyagraha.
Guruvayur Sathyagraha had a major impact in the reformation history of Kerala, said CM. The most important political aspect of these Satyagragas was that it questioned the established social norms against people from the weaker sections of the society and thus helped in bringing together people from all sections of the society in the freedom struggle, said CM.
CM honoured freedom fighter K. Madhavan, the lone surviving member of the march from Kannur to Guruvayur led by freedom fighter K. Kelappan in 1931.
The CM added that the State Government will construct a befitting memorial for freedom fighter K. Kelappan at Guruvayur as requested by Mr Madhavan in a memorandum submitted to the Government.
N.R. Madhava Menon founder director of National Law School of India University, Supreme Court senior counsel K.K. Venugopal, Kerala Public Service Commission chairman K.S. Radhakrishnan, Planning Board member C.P. John, Institute of Parliamentary Affairs T. Varghese, Institute vice president and Parliamentary Affairs Department secretary K.R. Jyothilal and Institute registrar S. Sumangala Devi were also present.
