"Nirbhaya" Centers to be opened for protection of women: CM

Thiruvananthapuram 17-10-2011: The meeting convened by CM has decided to start a project Nirbhaya which aims for the protection and rehabilitation of minor women who are victims of sexual abuse.

A center will be opened under the aegis of Social Security Mission at Thiruvananthapuram to protect these girls. Medical aid, counseling, education, job training and legal protection will be extended to them, said CM.

For initiating quick action against crimes towards women, a Fast track Court and for recording the statement, video conferencing facility will be set up, said CM and added that steps will be taken to resolve the pending cases immediately.

A special plan will be formulated for the protection of women and children, said CM. A draft regarding this will be promulgated to carry out discussion. This will be included in Government’s one year action plan, said CM.

A Special Squad will be formed to protect the women against sexual harassment and for checking sex trade. Awareness classes will be conducted in schools regarding the sexual atrocities against women. It has also been decided to reconstitute the vigil squads at Panchayath Levels. Micro mapping facility will also be brought to carry out a detailed study regarding the atrocities to which women are subjected to.

CM also said that the Government will also bring in a toll free helpline number for women and children.

Ministers M.K Muneer, P K Jayalakshmi, Sugathakumari, Mallika Sarabhayi, Sunitha Krishnan, Lida Jacob and Saradha Muraleedharan were also present.
