Letter to the Minister of Civil Aviation

Dear Sri. Gajapathi Rajuji,

I would like to draw your kind attention to the recent unjustified hike in air ticket price for the Gulf sector, by the airlines, beginning with the onset of school vacation period and holiday season.

In the past three months, the average air ticket fare from Kerala to Middle East and other Gulf countries were ranging from INR 6000 to 12000 for one way and INR 16000 to 18000 for return journey. Low cost carriers like Air India Express, Indigo, Spice Jet and others had special day special flights to Gulf sectors with very low price ranging from INR 4000 to 6000 for one way and INR 7000 to 9000 for return journey.

But in the last few weeks there is a visible hike of almost 100 percent in the air ticket price of different airlines for the same sectors and that is a now major concern for majority of the non resident Keralites in the Gulf region who, as you are aware, are already facing difficulties on account of uncertainty to their jobs in a tightening job market. As you are also aware Kerala to Gulf region has been the most profitable route for the airlines. (more…)
