Letter to Union Minister of Commerce

Dear Smt. Nirmala Sitharamanji,

Sub: Establishment of Kochi-Palakkad Hitech Industrial Corridor.

The development of the Chennai Bangalore Industrial Corridor (CBIC) is progressing with the completion of the master plan for the identified nodes along the CBIC. In order to reap the benefits of Industrial Corridor projects to the State of Kerala, I would propose to connect Kochi to the Chennai Bangalore Industrial Corridor via Coimbatore. My Government is very keen to enhance the industrial climate in the State.

The districts of Ernakulam, Palakkad and Thrissur are the most industrialized districts in Kerala. Ernakulam is endowed with the natural seaport at Kochi and has LNG terminal, International container transshipment terminal, bulk cargo terminal, etc. Many central and state PSUs like FACT, BPCL Kochi Refinery, TELK, KAMCO, Instrumentation Ltd., proposed Rail Coach Factory, etc, are located along the Kochi – Palakkad region. Many Industrial Parks are also in existence in the above corridor. Around 1000 acres of land in the possession of central and state PSUs in the region remains unutilized. Another 2000 acres of land will be acquired along the corridor region, and this was announced in the State Budget 2016-17. These will be in different nodes of 50 to 500 acres, situated on either side of NH-47.

The length of the corridor in Kerala is nearly 160 kilometers. In Kerala, the districts of Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram and Palakkad will be benefitted through the industrial corridor. The industrially advanced district of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu adjoins the Palakkad District. The all-weather seaport at Kochi, Cochin International Airport, Coimbatore International Airport, a four lane National Highway, the Natural gas pipeline of GAIL etc., will act as the key drivers for the proposed Industrial Corridor.
It will be ideal to connect the Industrial Corridor from Kochi to Bangalore in Karnataka via Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. The synergies exist in the corridor region and it will give the much needed impetus to the industrial development of the State of Kerala as well as the region.

Kerala being a State that achieved high literacy rate, has highly educated manpower. It may also be noted that the entire state is like a semi-urban area. In view of this, it is proposed to promote high technology industries along the proposed Kochi-Palakkad Hi-Tech Industrial Corridor. These would include Electronics, IT, biotechnology, Life Sciences, Petrochemical etc.

I would request you to consider the proposal of establishing the Kochi-Palakkad Hi-Tech Industrial Corridor and carry out the necessary studies and master plan for the project.

I request an early favourable action from Government of India.

With warm regards,
Yours sincerely,

Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman
