Letter to Union Minister of Railways

Dear Sri. Suresh Prabhuji,

I would like to bring your kind notice to the problem of death of Elephants and other wild animals by speeding trains at Walayar-Kottekkad section under Palakkad Railway Division in Kerala State. The Railway track of 30 KM from Palakkad in Kerala running to Coimbatore in Tamilnadu passes through thick forest areas having large number of Elephants and other wild animals. In the last couple of months, 4 Elephants and a large number of other wild animals including Deers were hit and killed by the speeding trains. It may kindly be noted that hitting of Elephants by trains may cause derailment of trains causing human causalities in addition to the loss of precious Wildlife.

Government of Kerala has taken all steps to reduce hitting of wild animals by trains in the section, but it has not been succeeded due to the lack of support from the local Railway authorities. The main reason for recurrence of such incidents in the recent past may be attributed to the non-implementation of continuous surveillance of the track and cordoning of the track to ensure safe crossing for animals.

In the circumstances, I would like to request you to consider the issue of erecting fencing along the railway track from Palakkad to Coimbatore and also other measures to protect precious wildlife crossing railway track.

Yours sincerely,

Pinarayi Vijayan
