The Government of Kerala has fulfilled its promise of constructing new houses for those rendered homeless by the megafloods in the State. Out of the 2000 houses that the Ministry of Cooperation has promised to build, 231 houses has been constructed in a time-bound manner. An amount of 5 lakhs was earmarked for building each house. This amount constitutes the four lakhs raised by the Ministry of Cooperation in addition to the one lakh released from the State Disaster Relief Authority’s Funds. At many places, the department could raise more than its target amount for house construction. The Department has ensured the time-bound completion of the houses with a daily appraisal system. The ‘Care Home’ project, which was started in December 2018 in Chengannur, is expected to be completed by April-May this year.
